Like any other
destinations in the Gulf, Oman has also lured in a lot of people from India and Coorgs have been no exception. What started
as a mere trickle of Coorgs in the early 70s, has risen to about 22 families and ten bachelors and the numbers are constantly
growing.
One
of the most important get-togethers of the Coorg community in Oman happens on the occasion of Kail Pouldh. According to the
Coorg tradition, Kailpoudh is celebrated with lot of fanfare. A lot of games and competitions,
both traditional and contemporary, are organized and eagerly participated in. With music and dancing for both children and
adults, this is also a platform where all new talents are showcased and encouraged. The festival serves as the perfect occasion
to bring together people, and inculcate in the children a sense of their roots, the richness of their heritage and an awareness
of what it means to be a Coorg.
The people responsible for getting together the Kodavas of Muscat and organising the Annual Meet
to celeberate Kailpoud are Mrs & Mr. Biddatanda Subbaiah (Madan). He was
the pioneer who took the responsibility of getting together his fellow Kodavas and organizing the annual meet. Mrs. Rohini
Subbiah was a good host at all their parties and supported her husband's social interest. Now the tradition has been
continued by Mrs. & Mr. Mekerira Kuttappa, Mrs. & Mr. Palandira Bopaiah and few others. |
